Give/Receive Feedback
Connecting
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Everyday Feedback
As doctors, logic, deductive reasoning, and analytical thinking are our mainstay. That part of our training allows us to make critical decisions on a moment’s notice in the ED, in surgery, and in other clinical venues.
However, our competence and ability in those areas does not translate into emotional intelligence (EQ). Understanding how to thoughtfully give and receive feedback in a healthcare leadership role is critical to your success. Dr. Stadnyk understands from his own experience that EQ, even when present, often gets lost in the successful performance of day-to-day tasks.
Yet EQ is a prerequisite for successful leaders. Together, we will discuss the importance of giving and receiving feedback in the workplace and how to properly address people’s performance in a way that lifts them up.
Next we will switch roles and talk about the importance of receiving feedback. As leaders, it’s important that we understand our own imperfections and remain open to listening to others express how we might improve ourselves. This is an acquired skill, and developing it becomes critical if we are to become stronger and more approachable leaders.
We will introduce you to appropriate methods of providing feedback to those employees who may need some extra encouragement. We will also learn how to utilize positive feedback as an effective tool to develop others.
